My short story about Iron man WCT 10/15/2005.
It was fun throughout except running in the mid day sun. You got to do it!
So here is a race report.
I did have a great support crew, and having a kitchen in the condo was the best, Thanks to David M. Gonzales (Gonzo) for hooking me up with travel service, also registering me in, helping at first transition, and it was good to see him out and about with a camera and a smile. Shiggy did my bike inspection so I saw him and Romy. I got star struck since I walked the bike in behind Norman Stadler. The underwear run was the best, and a lot of fun. Had a good experience with racedaywheels.com and Marc who owns it was great.
The actual race:
Susan got out the door an hour before me to volunteer, which also let me get a kiss just before entering the water. Not much space to warm up and the cannon went off. I swam straight and at a good clip, no thanks to my ability. I have never been in a race that was such a bulk swim. Everyone was pretty equal and always had bodies around. I got a swelled eye from an elbow and quite a few scratches.
Transition to bike was with Dave Gonzo (cool!) and then that long ride.
Outside of town, the roads were great and I knew I was moving well since I passed a lot of people. It was warm and the winds were tough, but I had nothing to compare it to, and was always expecting worse to come.

The warm bike became a hot run. When I got away from the ocean breeze, it got nasty, and I had a few Verps and ended up walking a bit between 13- 16. I was surprised to see the goody bag after 16 miles and needed help before then. When the sun started going down, it wasn't as bad, and I got to finish on a good leg. I think Mike Swan had me set for the heat as my bike and hydration was good, I was really surprised what the heat and humidity did and quickly remembered why I don't miss Wisconsin summers AT ALL.
Susan also volunteered for catching runners, was active, and heard my name. Susan made way to front to give me a kiss that was special. She then paraded me off to escorts and called for John Clinton who did a great job of taking care of me till I was back to what I consider normal. John got to put the medal on me, which was cool to get done by a friend.
Then it was time to party with family and friends. We watched the last people come in.
